Fun facts about Christmas

We also love to always look out for ways we can give even more to our users so with that in mind, here's some interesting facts you may not know about Christmas.

Despite everyone knowing that Christmas is on the 25th December, we don't really know for sure why it is on that date! Some say it was the actual birth of Christ, others say it is exactly nine months after the conception of Christ, while others say the date is merely symbolic. December 25th however is also the date of the winter solstice in the Roman Calendar and other winter festivals have taken place on that date so we can see that for an incredibly long time going back through out the ages it seems to have always been a date of celebration and joy.

Nowadays it is clearly defined as a Christian holiday but people of all faiths take part. This may be largely due to folk taking on the customs of the land they live in and worldwide emmigration has become much easier in the last few decades. Everyone knows what to expect at Christmas. You send out cards, exchange gifts, put up a christmas tree, sing Carols, hang your mistletoe somewhere that you hope to get a kiss and if you are young you hope to meet Santa Claus at a department store before he comes to your house and gives you everything you wanted. It used to be that if you were naughty all year around then Santa may only give you a piece of coal or a stick for your parents to spank you with but thankfully this is no longer the case. Retailers love the holiday and many stores will make half of their yearly turnover in the months of November and December. No wonder it is such an important time for them, it's not so great however if you have to work long hours to keep the stores open! At least when you wake up on Christmas morning you have some gifts from loved ones to look forward to.

The Santa Claus character is first recorded in 17th Century England but he is a meery drunken character, not someone who gives gifts! However, In Italy Santa is called La Befana and he is bringing gifts to the baby Jesus but gets lost so gives them to all the children of the world instead. And finally believe it or not there was never a simple recognised look of Santa in the western world until a Coca Cola marketing campaign that established the kindly white bearded man in a red suit we know so well today.
