Awesome Disney Facts
I think it would be very eye-opening if Disney could tell us how much we have each spent on their merchandise over the years! This popular and frankly massive company has been a part of our lives for over 80 years now and it looks set to be around for at least as long again. So we know that we love their products but how much do we really know about the early years of company? Here's some fun facts that might surprise you.
Disney was first setup in the era of silent movies. So they had no sound or color. Yet that didn't hold them back in any way as we know. Mickey Mouse was first created as Mortimer until Walts wife suggested Mickey. Mortimer became one of the recurring inhabitants and sometime troublemakers of Mickeys world.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs really put Disney on the map. Taking three long hard years to complete it turned out to be worth the wait. It made them so much money that they then could buy a 51 acre studio complex in California. Business slumped during World War 2 as the audiences at home dwindled so instead the studio started making information shorts and american propaganda cartoons.
Cinderella in 1950 revitalised the company and the industry, it was a golden time for Disney.
In 1955 Disneyland opened, with Ronald Reagan (then a jobbing actor) helping open the gates. The park had a shaky first few years as the public had never seen anything like it and it took time for word to spread and good word or mouth to lead to an increase in bookings.
Their films continued to be red hot, with Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmations all coming out in quick sucession. I think it is fair to say that Disneys early years were incredibly interesting and its good to see where all the popular cartoon characters we know so well got their start in life.
