Handy Manny is a brilliant cartoon that has been delighting audiences of all ages since 2006 when it was first launched by the Disney Channel. The hero of the show is Manny Garcia who is a bilingual Hispanic Handyman. This means he also speaks Spanish from time to time which is great for entertaining and educating the kids at home.
It's not only Manny who talks though, as his friendly team of helpful tools also speak up often. Felipe is a Philips Screwdriver who has a bit of a big head in every sense of the word! Turner is a flathead screwdriver who is a bit cynical but has a hidden heart of gold. Stretch is the most popular tool with kids, probably as he has a childs voice. He is a tape measure. Squeeze is a pair of pliers. She can be impatient and is also a young tool. Pat is a hammer who can be a bit clumsy but it often invaluable to the team. Dusty is a wise Hand Saw who is very friendly. Rusty is a Monkey Wrench who worries too much. Flicker is a flashlight who speaks good Spanish and is learning English, which is the opposite of the other tools!
Manny lives and works in the area of SheetRock Hills and is well known to the local inhabitants as the go-to guy when something breaks or needs fixed. No matter how big or small the problem is Manny is the guy for the job. He can also fix the biggest problem as well as the smallest. Regardless of what needs done he always seems to have the knowledge to save the day. When he needs supplies though, he calls in at Kellys hardware store. Despite being a fairly small store Kelly seems to have the uncanny ability to always have the part of equipment in stock that Manny needs. It doesn't matter how obscure the item needed is, Kelly will just happen to find one lying around somewhere.
Next door to Mannys shop is Mr Loparts sweet shop. This middle aged balding cat lover of a gentleman often has problems that need professional help. But even though Manny will of course offer to assist Mr Lopart or fully fix the issue at hand, My Lopart stubbornly but good naturedly refuses all help, thinking he can do it on his own. Often he boasts of his prowess at the task at hand. However shortly thereafter it will all go wrong for him. He really should have took the help. Mr Lopart serves as a timely reminder to the kids at home that you should always ask for help with tricky tasks and that many tasks require professional input. Once Manny and the tools settle down to work things always go smoothly and the day is saved. The tools work so well together they can even break into their trademark song "Fix It Right".
There have been eight DVD releases of Handy Mannys exploits so far and with his growing popularity I am sure there will be many more and Mannys adventured will be on our screens for a long time to come. This is great news as it is refreshing to see a positive role model who uses his hands and shows the benefits of knowing a trade in the modern computerised world.
