Impress your kids with these Superman Facts
I would well imagine that everyone in the western world knows of Superman and can recognise his iconic "S" logo on his chest. Did you know however that he has been around since 1932? Incredible isn't it, to think he has survived and thrived for so long throughout the different generations.
Supermans story is well known. Born on a dying planet named Krypton, his parents desperately try to save him by placing him into a small spaceship and send him hurtling out into the void of space. Their hope is that he will make his way to the planet Earth and to kindly parents who can raise him. Their hopes come true and the Kents find him just outside of their town of Smallville. Taking the adoptive name of Clark Kent, Superman grows up in Smallville which is a rural farming community. It's here he learns to be a good person and that he can use his powers for good and to help the needy. He hides his abilities from all those around him, partly in the hope of having a normal childhood (the wish of his adoptive parents) and partly out of concern for the attention they would bring. He constantly uses his abilities though to fight crime and save the day on many occasions.
As he turns into a man he becomes a reporter in the city of Metropolis, working at the Daily Planet newspaper beside his new friends Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson. Its a good job for a guy who wants to keep his pulse on whats happening in the city as the incoming news alerts lets him know where he needs to be to do the most good.
As the years pass, Superman becomes a hero even to the other heroes. It's not because of his amazing powers though, but more about his heart and determination to do the right thing. Despite technically being an alien, they would call him a thoroughly good human being. He sets the bar for others, showing the level of sacrifice and commitment needed.
Fighting off a wide range of incredibly powerful villains (often more powerful even than he is) you can be sure anytime Superman gets into a really big fight it will be truly epic stuff. He even died once in a battle against the monster called Doomsday but came back to protect the citizens of Earth once more.
