The incredibly engaging and exciting world of the hero known as the Batman has been thrilling readers since the end of the 1930's. One of the keys to his enduring popularity with males in particular has been his ability to adapt to the times. In the early days he was more of a pulp fiction character, but as the world has turned so has the Batman. He quickly adapts and uses technology as it is invented and ensures his arsenal of weapons and utilties is state of the art.

Thankfully he can afford this as he is a multimillionaire. By day he is the outgoing playboy eternal bachelor Bruce Wayne, the lazy heir of a fortune that was built up by his Grandfather. Only us readers know the truth that is is a carefully designed ruse to throw people off the scent that he is really a caped crimefighter.

Sadly he became a millionaire at the cost of his parents. One evening after the family had just left a movie theater a common crook robbed his mothers pearls and in the tense moment both Bruces mother and father were gunned down. Bruce lost his parents but Gothams gained a Dark Knight in that moment. He swore he would do all he can to prevent this happening to other innocent lives and that he would dedicate himself to fighting criminals and making the streets of Gotham a much safer place.

As a young man he travelled the world, training in many martial arts and learning detective skills. Once he was ready to begin his war on crime all he needed was a symbol. A way to strike fear into the hearts of those whow ould bring fear into the lives of others. As a bat smashed through the window of his home one evening, Bruce took it as an omen. It was reaffirmed when he found the secret networks of tunnels under his family mansion. They had long been a home to many bats, but now it would be home to an altogether different kind of bat...a Batman!

With the help of his faithful butler Alfred an armoured costume was made. Many hidden tools and devices were hidden in it, whether in the belt, cape, hood or compartments. Together with plenty of bulletproofing and kevlar perhaps bruce could turn the tide on the seemingly endless tide of villainy that was destroying and choking Gotham city.

After a few years Bruce decided to take on a ward. Young Dick grayson was a highly talented and trained trapeze artist whose parents were also killed by criminals. Seeing some of himself in the boy, young Grayson was taken under the wing of Batman and soon the wisecracking acrobatic Robin was the hot new sidekick in town.

As years passed, Dick Grayson would grow up and strike out on his own as Nightwing. Others took his place, first Jason Todd then Tim Drake. Along the way there have also been BatGirls and Batwomen fighting for the cause of justice.
